Technical Specialist – Functional Safety Engineer
We’re looking for a Technical Specialist – Functional Safety Engineer to join a team in Southfield, MI working at the forefront of automotive safety and system development. If you have deep expertise in ISO 26262 and enjoy working across system architecture, safety concepts, and cross-functional teams, this role offers the opportunity to make a real impact.
About the Role
As a Functional Safety Engineer, you will take a leading role in developing and ensuring functional safety across complex automotive systems. You’ll work closely with hardware, software, and system teams to define safety concepts, requirements, and architecture.
This is a senior role where you will drive safety processes, influence technical decisions, and contribute to building safe and reliable systems in a fast-paced environment.
What You’ll Do
Lead development of functional safety requirements and system decomposition
Review and approve HARA, Functional Safety Requirements, and Technical Safety Requirements
Contribute to and validate system architecture from a safety perspective
Define functional safety concepts for system, hardware, and software according to ISO 26262
Drive development of functional safety processes, tools, and methods
Work with SOTIF requirements for autonomous driving and core subsystems
Collaborate with cross-functional teams across hardware, software, and validation
Support and review validation and verification activities
Manage interfaces with suppliers and external partners
Contribute to technical decisions and support management with system-level insights
What We’re Looking For
Extensive experience working with ISO 26262 and functional safety processes
Experience developing and delivering safety work products
Experience with SOTIF analysis
Proven ability to lead or drive functional safety activities in complex systems
Experience supporting audits or external reviews
Understanding of safety responsibility split between OEMs and suppliers
Experience with tools such as Medini, APIS IQ, or Jama
Strong communication and organizational skills
Ability to work independently and take ownership
Most Have
Experience working in Agile environments
Knowledge of Automotive SPICE or CMMI
Experience with embedded systems (hardware and/or software)
